Philip Jones Griffiths had a happy childhood as a native Welsh speaker in rural north Wales. He was born, one of three boys, in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, played prop forward in the rugby team, and was educated at local schools. It was typical of his modesty to regard reading pharmacy at Liverpool University as down to chance rather than ability.
Born in Rhuddlan, Wales, Philip Jones Griffiths studied pharmacy in Liverpool and worked in London while photographing part-time for the Manchester Guardian. In 1961, he became a full-time freelancer for the London-based Observer. He covered the Algerian War in 1962, then moved to Central Africa.
Vietnam Inc. is a photographic book produced by Philip Jones Griffiths and published in 1971 by Collier Books in New York, in both hard and soft back. It contains 266 black and white photographs most with captions, sympathetic to the civilian perspective of the South Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War .
