The result was a victory for incumbent President Zhelyu Zhelev of the Union of Democratic Forces, who won 52.8% of the vote in the second round. Philosopher and dissident, Zhelyu Zhelev was the first democratically elected president of post-communist Bulgaria. Born in '35, he was expelled from the Communist Party and marginalized because of his political convictions in 1965.
