Autobiographical essay. Publication date. 1939. " A Sketch of the Past " is an autobiographical essay written by Virginia Woolf in 1939. It was written as a break from writing her biography of Roger Fry, English artist and critic, and fellow member of the Bloomsbury Group.
Woolf’s essay states that she remains emotionally tied to her mother, thinking of her as a constant audience for her work. The second essay, “A Sketch of the Past,” represents a time late in Woolf’s writing career, after she was already famous and financially independent.
A Sketch of the Past. Mirroring the previous essay, this one is written decades later after Woolf is established in her writing. She reconsiders those childhood memories in light of her present clarity. Basically, she is able to discern a more realistic understanding of her early life. At the same time she refers to her context in writing the poem.

It introduces Woolf’s concept of “moments of being” and of “non-being,” the latter being the cotton wool in between the important stuff of life/memory.
