In the 19th century, the Flemish Movement emerged around a form of cultural patriotism which celebrated Flemish traditions and history and sought equal status for Dutch in the Belgian nation-state, often under the auspices of the Catholic Church.

The Flemish movement gathered strength, demanding autonomy in the 1930s when the Vlaams National Verbond became the main nationalist party. Flemish was recognized as the sole language of Flanders in the 1932 language laws.

The movement aspired to a federal Belgium, with the more extreme faction dreaming of independence for Flanders. Over the first two years of the war, the activists formed small and unrelated minority groups in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent.
11. Nov. 2020 · The Belgian state has decentralized, with significant powers devolved to the Flemish and Walloon governments. Flemish sub-state nationalism is now also characterized by a populist turn, driven by the populist radical right and independence-seeking party, the Vlaams Belang (VB, Flemish Interest).
