Carter Burwell was born on November 18, 1954. He graduated from Harvard College in 1977. While at Harvard he studied animation with Mary Beams and George Griffin, electronic music with Ivan Tcherepnin, and pursued a course of independent study at the MIT Media Lab (then known as the Architecture Machine Group).

Working out of his home studio in Amagansett on Long Island—where he lives with his wife, the artist Christine Sciulli, and three children—he conjured soundsfor her comedy about a 14-year-old girl in thirteenth-century England, based on a 1994 children’s novel of the same name.

7. Feb. 2018 · In 1983, while he was in the avant-garde pop group Thick Pigeon with no previous experience in the field of film score composition, he met Joel and Ethan Coen, who were looking for someone to compose the score for their first feature film Blood Simple, which they were editing.
