Sein Freund Karl Giese gilt als "Frau des Hauses". Hirschfeld ist als Institutsleiter in fast allen Institutsabteilungen präsent. Er bestimmt die theoretische Ausrichtung des Instituts mit dem Schwerpunkt Hormonforschung.
