History and description. Luzhniki Stadium, initially called Central Lenin Stadium, was built between 1955 and 1956. It was the result of the ambition of the Soviet leadership to upgrade the country’s sports facilities after the Soviet Union had tasted its first post-war successes at the 1952 Olympics.

FIFA World Cup. History. 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the summer of 2018 Luzhniki was the main stadium for the FIFA World Cup. The Big Sports Arena hosted the opening match, three group-stage matches, a round-of-16 match, a semi-final and the final. Forty-five facilities were built or upgraded in the Olympic Complex for the FIFA World Cup.
