Margaret McGinty, eine Bardame und ehemalige Schauspielerin, wird erhängt in ihrer Wohnung aufgefunden. Da ein eintreffender Polizist den vermeintlichen Täter, James Bentley, scheinbar auf frischer Tat ertappt hat, erscheint die Verurteilung des Angeklagten nur noch eine Formsache zu sein.
