Thompson was born 20 January 1962 in London, and is the daughter of actress Phyllida Law, and actor Eric Thompson. She is the younger sister of actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson.
Law was born in Glasgow, the daughter of Meg "Mego" and William Law, a journalist.
