In blogs, reddit posts/comments, and even in a Wikipedia article, it is repeatedly claimed without evidence or citation that there was an Old English word werman 'man (i.e. male human)' analogous to the form wifman 'woman (i.e. female human)' which we still have today as the word 'woman'.
Crap, this thread's old, but what's interesting is that Danish has a gender neutral term "man" meaning "one", and is used in everyday speech like any other pronoun. We also have "folk" meaning exactly what you think it does. Man is "mand" (with stress to distinguish the two), and woman is "kvinde".

Woman, on the other hand, derives from Wif or wifman. What was used to refer to man with its sense of today is wer or werman . That this hits the right spot is confirmed by the survival of wer in werewolf (literally man-wolf).
