By 1849 Joseph Henry of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., was plotting daily weather maps based on telegraphic reports, and in 1869 Cleveland Abbe at the Cincinnati Observatory began to provide regular weather forecasts using data received telegraphically.
