James Tiberius Kirk, commonly known as James T. Kirk or Captain Kirk, is a fictional character in the Star Trek media franchise. Originally played by Canadian actor William Shatner , Kirk first appeared in Star Trek serving aboard the starship USS Enterprise as captain.
Kirk eventually managed to destroy the creature with an antimatter bomb. When the Enterprise's five-year mission ended in 2270, Kirk was promoted to admiral. He accepted the promotion against the advice of Dr. McCoy, who warned him that he would never be happy unless he was in command of a starship.

Admiral Yaramoto calls James T. Kirk to his office and informs him that he has been permanently reassigned to shore duty. After all, Kirk is an admiral and his recent command of the USS Enterprise was always understood to be temporary. Rather than put up with shore duty, Kirk resigns.
