Set on the southern edge of an ancient glacial ridge, Blue Island was settled in 1835, making it one of the oldest communities in Cook County. In 1834, the Chicago Democrat observed “the ridge, when viewed from a distance, appears standing in an azure mist of vapor, hence the appellation, Blue Island.”
At its founding, Blue Island was the most important settlement south of Chicago. Today a wealth of fantastic homes and fascinating history has been preserved, and the homes and businesses on this tour span from before the Civil War to the early twentieth century.
