Born in St. Petersburg in 1812, Anatole N. Demidoff, First Prince of San Donato, was one of the most talented, energetic, and extravagant of the Demidoffs.
After his father's death in 1828, Anatole returned to the villa in San Donato, near Florence, that Nicolas had begun building, and proceeded to enlarge it, eventually transforming most of it in 1836 into a workshop for the manufacture of silks. He held his office well and was promoted to mayor a year later. [1] Paul's uncle, Anatole Demidov, died in Florence in the spring of 1870. Paul permanently resigned from the civil service and moved on to live a great international life as Prince of San Donato.
