First schools opened. 1847: Lawrence incorporated as a town. Formed from 3 ½ sq. miles from Methuen and 2 ½ sq. miles from Andover. Named after one or all members of the Lawrence family. Lawrence Fire Department was organized. 1848: Great Stone Dam completed. The last granite block was laid exactly 3 years after the first on September 19, 1848.
The city was built in the 1840s and is known as the nation’s first planned industrial city. In the early 20th century, Lawrence was a global leader in cotton and textile production and the site of the 1912 Bread and Roses Strike, one of the more important events in workers’ labor struggles.
