Yangon University is the oldest and most prestigious university in Myanmar, founded in 1878 as an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta. Background History of the University of Yangon Library. The University of Yangon Library (UYL) - the first modern library building in Myanmar - was built in 1927. The two-storey building, in the shape of the letter ‘L’, was designed by the British architect T.O. Foster. The base of the ‘L’ became the main stack room.
