The Weimar Republic, officially known as the German Reich, was a historical period of Germany from 9 November 1918 to 23 March 1933, during which it was a constitutional federal republic for the first time in history; hence it is also referred to, and unofficially proclaimed itself, as the German Republic.
Although a few new political parties were founded, the party system of the Weimar Republic showed a remarkable continuity in relation to the imperial system. The Social Democratic Party of Germany ( SPD ), with its roots in the labouring classes, was the strongest political force from 1919 to 1932.
Though the radical left, the radical right and the Nazis dominated the 1920s, there were numerous other Weimar political parties at work in the Reichstag.
