23. Sept. 1976 · The First Carter-Ford Presidential Debate EDWIN NEWMAN, MODERATOR: Good evening. I’m Edwin Newman, moderator of this first debate of the 1976 campaign between Gerald R. Ford of Michigan, Republican candidate for president, and Jimmy Carter of Georgia, Democratic candidate for president.
Ford’s approval rating had plummeted when he pardoned Nixon and he barely survived a Republican primary challenge from Ronald Reagan. Going into the fall, he was trailing Democratic Gov. Jimmy Carter of Georgia and determined he needed to prove himself on the debate stage.
