The completion of the college, its construction, and its opening in 1688 all happened during Louis XIV's reign (1643-1715).

Financé par le cardinal Mazarin, le collège des Quatre Nations est destiné à l’instruction de 60 gentilshommes. Il est bâti entre 1662 et 1674 par l’architecte Louis Le Vau et son successeur François II d’Orbay.
