Veronika is addicted to morphine and in the hands of the unscrupulous Dr. Katz (Annemarie Düringer), who makes depressed, single people dependent on drugs in order to gain access to her patients’ fortunes. Robert and his girlfriend Henriette (Cornelia Froboess) try to set a trap for the doctor but the plan fails, Henriette is murdered.
Veronika personifies this aimless yearning that defines the German character, and Fassbinder seems to sympathize closely with her.
