The worst instance of this is the scene at the end of the film where Marnie regresses to her childhood, for reasons that are neither apparent nor particularly convincing. This sequence is brilliantly realised (and makes good use of the zoom-forward-and-track-back effect previously used in Vertigo ) but lacks the restraint that Hitchcock showed in his denouements to Vertigo and Psycho .
