Nicolas Schmit will be the third politician that the European Socialist Party (PES) family has sent as its lead candidate in the European elections. He was preceded by two politicians who had the talent to be a tribune of the people: Germany's Martin Schulz was the Socialists' top campaigner in 2014 and the Dutchman Frans Timmermans was in the running in 2019.

A member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), he is the PES lead candidate to the 2024 EU elections this June. He was previously a member of the government of Luxembourg from 2004 to 2019 and a member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2019.
