He was born in Dilston, Northumberland. He replaced original ELO violinist Steve Woolam in 1972 and performed in their first live concert.
Steve Woolam departed first, and the remaining quartet added Hugh McDowell and Andy Craig on cellos, keyboard player Richard Tandy and Wilf Gibson on violin for a series of indifferent live appearances, following which Wood took Hunt and McDowell to form Wizzard. The next anyone heard of Mike Edwards was his being crushed to death in a freak driving accident, while Mel Gale went on to run a small pressing plant that ironically manufactured the limited vinyl run of the group's 2006 comeback single, Surrender.
