VCI's Blu-ray of Flame over India is actually a print of the reportedly slightly longer original English version North West Frontier. The picture quality is certainly good, and the image has a nice "film feel". The hues and sharpness look a half-step down from optimal quality, yet this is the best I've seen this show.
North West Passage was released in the USA as Flame over India. Lauren Bacall, Kenneth More and Wendy Hiller. Geoffrey Unsworth's widescreen photography added to the film's sense of exotic adventure. A train engine (Victoria) plays a leading role in this movie. I.S. Johar in a scene-stealling performance as Gupta the train driver.
Many Indians were employed as extras on the film, but in non-speaking roles. The exception was I. S. Johar who played Gupta the engine driver. Johar had been imprisoned by the British after the Second World War, but played an Indian character from the 1930s empire genre — faithful and comic (Chibnall, 2000,210).
