  3. 1. Jan. 2019 · King was born in Ontario in 1874. His maternal grandfather, William Lyon Mackenzie, had led the 1837 Rebellion in Upper Canada. A law graduate, King entered the civil service and in 1900 was appointed deputy minister of the department of labour. He was elected to the Commons in 1908 as a Liberal member and became labour minister the following year.
