The Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study was founded in 1961 by the then-president of Radcliffe College, Mary Ingraham Bunting, who sought to stem the exodus of highly trained and educated women from promising careers. The institute provided stipends as well as access to all of the resources of Harvard University to take up their chosen creative intellectual studies.

Marie Caroline Bass (1885-1975) Marie Caroline Bass attended Radcliffe College and graduated in 1905, although she chose to be affiliated with the Class of 1906, with which she had entered. She later earned a master's degree at Radcliffe in 1915. She taught at the Roland Park Country School near Baltimore, Maryland, until her retirement in 1952.

In 1917 the Radcliffe College Alumnae Association funded a committee to sponsor post-war relief work by Radcliffe alumnae in France. This collection consists of scrapbooks with photographs, correspondence, and reports describing the Radcliffe alumnae relief work. The scrapbooks were compiled by Anna Holman, who graduated from Radcliffe in 1914.
