Leichte Erdstöße kündigen an, daß es Aktivität bei der Plattenverschiebung an der San-Andreas-Verwerfung gibt. Die Seismologen entlang der amerikanischen Pazifikküste sind sich sicher, daß mit einer großen Katastrophe zu rechnen ist. Tatsächlich kommt es dann zu einem enormen Erdbeben der Stärke 9, welches sich entlang der gesamten kalifornischen Küste ausbreitet.
Obwohl San Andreas auf erzählerischer Linie durchweg enttäuscht, ist der Film als Katastrophenspektakel zumindest halbwegs annehmbar. Immerhin strahlt Hauptdarsteller Dwayne Johnson eine gewisse Präsenz aus und schafft es, seinen oftmals lächerlich-markigen Drehbuchzeilen eine unterhaltsame Note zu verleihen.
