Die Informatikerin Grace Brewster Murray Hopper (*1906, New York †1992 Virginia, USA) gilt als erste moderne Programmiererin. Sie begann ihre Ausbildung am Vassar College in New York, wechselte dann zur Yale University, wo sie ihr Studium der Mathematik und Physik mit Auszeichnungen beendete und anschließend promovierte.
Bevor Grace Hopper in die Rechnerwelt einstieg, hatte sie bereits eine Karriere als Mathematikerin beschritten: sie lehrte ab 1931 zwölf Jahre lang Mathematik am Vassar College, einem der ältesten Frauen-Colleges der USA, promovierte gleichzeitig in Yale und forschte am renommierten Courant Institute der New York University.

Feb. 2022 · In interviews with the News, four students in Grace Hopper described Calhoun’s lingering presence in the College, which ranges from physical objects to some students referring to the College as Calhoun, even after the change. One Hopper student, Zoe Sinclair ’23, said that Calhoun’s name has such a negative racial connotation that it does not belong in the college at all.

Hopper was born on December 9, 1906 in New York City. As a child, she attended a preparatory school in New Jersey. Later, she enrolled at Vassar College. After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Hopper went to Yale University, where she earned her Masters and Ph.D. in Mathematics. Afterwards she began teaching at Vassar.
