Born in Middleton, TN, Estelle began her career as a schoolteacher in Memphis, married Everett Axton, raised their two children at home for ten years, then worked as a teller in a bank. When her brother needed money to develop a record company, she persuaded her husband they should remortgage their house and joined her brother as a full partner at the newly named Stax Records in 1959.

Estelle Axton (* 11. September 1918 in Middleton, Tennessee als Estelle Stewart ; † 25. Februar 2004 in Memphis ) war eine US-amerikanische Unternehmerin und, gemeinsam mit ihrem Bruder Jim Stewart , die Gründerin von Stax Records .
Im ehemaligen Kassenbereich eröffnete Estelle Axton einen Plattenladen, der sich für das Erkennen aktueller Musiktrends als sehr nützlich erwies. Schon bald fanden sich Musiker aus der näheren Umgebung ein, darunter Booker T. Jones , Steve Cropper , Donald „Duck“ Dunn und Al Jackson , aus denen Stewart eine labeleigene Band ( Booker T. & the M.G.’s ) zusammenstellte.
