On March 3, 1942, a special exhibition opened at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in the Fuller Building at 41 East 57th Street in New York City. Pierre, the youngest son of French painter Henri Matisse and the owner of the gallery, was an art dealer, specializing in modern and contemporary European and American artforms.
The Pierre Matisse Gallery no longer exists, but the Fuller Building, which housed it, still stands at 41 East 57th Street. From 3 to 8 March 1942, one of Mondrian’s works hung in the Pierre Matisse Gallery’s exhibition Artists in Exile , which featured work by 14 European artists who had relocated to the US because of the war.
