24. Nov. 2021 · Papias of Hierapolis. PAPIAS of Hierapolis was an early church leader of Hierapolis; chronicler of early Christianity. The information we have about Papias (ad 60–130) and his work was given by Eusebius of Caesarea and Irenaeus of Lyons. Irenaeus stated that Papias had heard the apostle John preach and also knew Polycarp.
Papias von Hierapolis schrieb für den erklärten Zweck, eine genaue Aufzeichnung der Lehren und Werke der Apostel zu präsentieren, wie sie ihm von Johannes dem Älteren berichtet wurden. Irenäus nimmt an, dass dies der Apostel Johannes ist, während Eusebius annimmt, dass Papias von einem weniger bekannten Johannes spricht.
