Heute scheint Karl Kautsky (1854–1938) fast vergessen. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts gehörte Kautsky zu den einflussreichsten Theoretikern der sozialistischen Bewegung.
1863 verließ die Familie Kautsky Prag und ließ sich in Wien nieder. K. besuchte 2 Jahre lang die Schule des Benediktiner-Stiftes Melk. 1871 kam er unter dem Eindruck der Pariser Kommune mit sozialistischen Ideen in Berührung. 1874 begann er in Wien Geschichte, Rechtswissenschaft, Philosophie und Politische Ökonomie zu studieren.
