In 1975, Steve had moved to Los Angeles and he reformed Booker T. & the M.G's with Jackson and Dunn. Before the group could make their comeback, Jackson was murdered in his home in Memphis. Nel 1977 Steve Cropper si unì agli Levon Helm & The Rco All-Stars, un gruppo formato Levon Helm, batterista dei The Band. In questa formazione suonarono anche Booker T. Jones e Donald Dunn . Nel 1978 Steve Cropper, insieme a Donald Dunn e al batterista Willie Hall , allievo dello storico Al Jackson Jr., entrò a far parte della Blues Brothers Band di Dan Aykroyd e John Belushi .
Meanwhile, Levon formed the RCO All-Stars, which included members of Booker T. and the MGs and debuted on Saturday Night Live. The party celebrating the group’s self-titled album was held at the Barn, where Levon’s daughter, six-year-old Amy Helm, sang publicly for the first time.
