Fra 1923 var han ansat ved Paddington Green børnehospital i London, hvor han blev i 40 år, de senere som leder af sin egen afdeling. Sin psykoanalytiske uddannelse fik han hos bl.a. Melanie Klein og James Strachey (1887-1967), der tilhørte Bloomsbury-gruppen.
