Rudolf Carnap was born on 18 May 1891, in Ronsdorf, near Dusseldorf, then in the Rhine Province of Prussia. His father Johannes Carnap came from a family of poor weavers, but after long and hard work became the prosperous and respected owner of a ribbon-making factory. Rudolf’s mother Anna ( née Dorpfeld) was a teacher and an aspiring author.
