The cause of his death was a stroke.

Willis Ben Bouchey (May 24, 1907 – September 27, 1977) was an American character actor who appeared in almost 150 films and television shows. He was born in Vernon, Michigan, but raised by his mother and stepfather in Washington state.
It almost works until they reach Lamb County, Texas, where tough, stubborn Sheriff Hockley (Willis Bouchey) is located. When the escapees threaten to kill Matt if Hockley doesn't let them pass, Hockley encourages them to go ahead and kill Matt with the understanding that the escapees will all be killed as soon as they follow through with the execution.
