Rufus Thomas werd op 26 maart 1917 in Cayce, Mississippi geboren als vijfde en jongste kind van een deelpachter. Toen hij twee jaar was vertrok het gezin naar Memphis, Tennessee, waar hij zijn hele leven zou blijven wonen.
