Hans Bethe was born in Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine, on July 2, 1906. He attended high school and university in Frankfurt, Germany, and completed his Ph.D. working under the famous physicist Arnold Sommerfeld in July 1928. He worked and lectured in Germany before traveling with fellowship support to study in Cambridge, England, and Rome, Italy.
