  1. Erna Schilling. Erna Schilling (1884 – 2 October 1945) was a German nightclub dancer and artist's model . The daughter of a proofreader for a publishing company, she was born in Berlin. When she was eighteen, she left home with her elder sister Gerda; the two became dancers in Berlin nightclubs. There in 1912 she met artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

  3. About the Work. From 1912 onwards, the sisters Erna and Gerda Schilling appear in many of Kirchner’s Berlin period paintings (1911–1917). Both worked as dancers in nightclubs and as models for various artists. Close together and yet isolated from each other, Kirchner placed Gerda diagonally behind Erna dipping her hands into a sink.
