John F. Kennedy, Jr., privat auch John-John genannt, wurde als drittes Kind von John F. Kennedy und seiner Frau Jacqueline Bouvier geboren. Seine älteste Schwester Arabella war eine Totgeburt (1956). Sein jüngerer Bruder Patrick (* 1963) starb zwei Tage nach seiner Geburt. Heute lebt nur noch seine ältere Schwester, Caroline.
In 1961, John F. Kennedy was presented with a grant of arms for all the descendants of Patrick Kennedy (1823–1858) from the Chief Herald of Ireland. The design of the arms (three gold closed helmets on a black field) [23] strongly alludes to symbols in the coats of arms of the O'Kennedys of Ormonde and the FitzGeralds of Desmond , from whom the family is descended.

Als Tatverdächtiger wurde Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) verhaftet und zwei Tage später in Polizeigewahrsam von dem Nachtclubbesitzer Jack Ruby (1911–1967) getötet.
John and Jacqueline Kennedy had their first child, Caroline, in 1957; John Jr. was born two weeks after his father won the presidency. A third child, Patrick, died two days after his birth in August 1963. After a long succession of elderly presidents, it was refreshing for many to see the Kennedy family's youth and vitality.
