Wellington College is an independent day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 13 to 18 occupying 400 acres of beautiful parkland in Crowthorne, Berkshire. It was established as a monument to the Duke of Wellington and to educate the orphan sons of army officers, with Queen Victoria laying the foundation stone in 1856. Today the College is home to 1,100 pupils of which 80% are boarders.

Wellington College, founded as a living memorial to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was opened in 1859, and our digital archive contains material from the foundation right up to the present day. Wellington has remained on its beautiful and extensive site in Berkshire since its foundation. Girls were admitted to the Sixth Form in 1975, and the school became fully co-educational in 2006. The College is now home to 1100 pupils, 80% of whom board and some of whom are still Foundationers.
19. Sept. 2023 · Located in Crowthorne, Berkshire, Wellington College is clustered around a grand nineteenth century baroque estate on a 400 acre site some 30 miles from London. The College is a heavyweight player in the UK public school sector, and one of the top five English co-educational day and boarding schools for the international baccalaureate.
House Allocation. After offers of places are made in Year 6, a number of events are held at the College to enable families to visit different Houses, meet the HMs and be toured by current pupils. Families are then asked to submit a list of their House preferences. The date of registration is used as a deciding factor when allocating Houses.
Wellington College, Crowthorne was founded under Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, as a national memorial to this Great Duke following his death in 1852. Once built Wellington College was opened in 1859 as a boy’s boarding school for the education of orphans of the British armed forces but has now expanded to become one of the nation’s co-educational boarding schools.
