Bunk Johnson (December 27, 1879 or 1889 – July 7, 1949) confused Jazz historians for years by lying about almost everything, but nevertheless he was an early Jazz pioneer who apparently played in bands led by Buddy Bolden. He definitely played in Frankie Dusen’s Eagle Band, The Superior Orchestra and with Clarence Williams.
Bunk Johnson is most probably born on 27th December 1889. The exact year of his birth is not clear because it is believed that for some reason he choose to add 10 years to his age and stated to have been born in1879. Although jazz-historians made efforts to find evidence of his actual birthday, there is no real proof.
