  3. Profile: Albert Allick "Al" Bowlly was born on January 7th, 1899 in Portuguese, East Africa (now known as Mozambique). His father was a Greek Orthodox and his Mother was a Lebanese Catholic. During the 1930s, he was the most popular Jazz singer and crooner in Britain, and the second biggest singer in America while he was in the US.

  5. 26. Mai 2014 · Bowlly was South African (although born in Mozambique) yet he became a great star in both the UK and America during the 1930’s. Al Bowlly enjoyed over 15 big hits from 1935 to 1941, acquiring a mass radio following of millions. Tragically he was killed in the Blitz, when his home in St. James was bombed in 1941. He was 43 years old.
