Aaliyah est née le 16 janvier 1979 à New York, dans l'arrondissement de Brooklyn [1], et a grandi à Détroit dans le Michigan.Elle a des origines afro-américaines et onneiouts [2] et est la fille cadette de Diane et Michael Haughton.
Aaliyah firmò il suo primo contratto discografico all'età di 12 anni con la Blackground Records, etichetta fondata dallo zio Barry Hankerson. [17] Hankerson presentò la nipote all'allora astro nascente del rhythm and blues R.
