1. Apr. 2024 · Sir Peter Pears (born June 22, 1910, Farnham, Surrey, England—died April 3, 1986, Aldeburgh, Suffolk) was a British tenor, a singer of outstanding skill and subtlety who was closely associated with the works of Sir Benjamin Britten. He received a knighthood in 1977.
Toward the end of his life Benjamin Britten urged his authorized biographer, Donald Mitchell, to “tell the truth about Peter and me.” Britten’s nearly forty-year professional partnership with Peter Pears had gained international recognition, but the story of their ‘marriage’, a term they first used to describe their relationship in the 1940s, had not been told.

For nearly 20 years, the two men made their home together in The Red House in Aldeburgh, and in the hall is a painting that tells a vivid story about their lives as gay men at this time. Biography. Pears studied at the Royal College of Music on an opera scholarship and later with Elena Gerhardt (1883–1961).
