Friele Gensfleisch zur Laden is one of the first known leaders of the Keepers. His reign began in 1385. He used the strong support from the catholic church to rebuild the Keepers archives which were destroyed in a fire in 1385. The library later burned down in a similar fire in 1685. His reign ended in 1425 when he was replaced by his son Johannes Gutenberg.

Biography. Friele's birthdate is not known. He was a member of a well-to-do and influential patrician family of Mainz. He was married to Else Wirich from a merchant family in Mainz, [1] in other, mostly 19th century literature, she is named as Else zu Gudenberg, from another patrician family of Mainz. [2] Friele died in 1419.
HENNE, HENLE oder HENCHEN GENSFLEISCH, so taucht GUTENBERGs Name in frühen Urkunden auf, war jüngster Sohn des Patriziers FRIELE GENSFLEISCH zur Laden und seiner zweiten Ehefrau ELSE WIRICH. Es wird angenommen, dass sein Vater im Tuchgewerbe tätig war. Erst 1430 erscheint in einer Urkunde der Name HENCHIN GUDENBERG mit Bezug auf eine ehemalige Wohnstätte der Familie.
