Founded by J.T. Carter, the group included Talmadge "Tommy" Gough (1939-2014), Harold "Chico" Torres (deceased) and Patricia Van Dross (1943-1993) (older sister of R&B singer Luther Vandross). Carter selected vocalist Johnny Mastrangelo (1939-2010) (shortened to Johnny Mastro and later changed to Johnny Maestro ) as lead vocalist.

Patricia Van Dross, Harold Torres, Talmadge (Tommy) Gough and J.T. Carter formed the group at P.S. 160 Junior High School in Manhattan. With influences ranging from the Mills Brothers to the Ames Brothers, the unnamed foursome started performing at hospitals and charity functions.
Patricia Van Dross, older sister of the R&B singer Luther Vandross, sang with Johnny Maestro while The Crests were signed to the Joyce Record label. Before The Crests signed with Coed Records , Van Dross left the group because her mother did not want her 15-year-old daughter touring with the older guys.
8. März 2011 · The Crests were a popular New York City R&B musical group of the late 1950s, often thought to be another all-black teenage-sound band, they were in fact about as integrated as a group could get, with four men (two of them black, one Puerto Rican and one Italian) and one black female.
His sisters, Patricia "Pat" and Ann, began taking Vandross to the Apollo Theater and to a theater in Brooklyn to see Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin. Patricia sang with the vocal group The Crests and was featured on the songs "My Juanita" and "Sweetest One".
They were unusual for their time in that they were a fully integrated group, with two black males (J.T. Carter and Talmadge Gough), a black female (Patricia Van Dross, Luther Vandross‘ sister), a Puerto Rican (Harold Torres), and an Italian (John Mastrangelo, aka Johnny Maestro).
