Von 1982 bis 1985 war Jones Gitarrist bei Chequered Past mit dem Sänger Michael Des Barres. Außerdem spielten er und Cooks auf Johnny Thunders' Soloalbum So Alone (1978). Als Studiomusiker arbeitete Jones u. a. für Thin Lizzy, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Adam Ant, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop und Andy Taylor.
So Alone is the debut solo studio album by Johnny Thunders, then leader of the Heartbreakers and formerly lead guitarist for New York Dolls. The album was released on 6 October 1978 and was produced by Thunders and Steve Lillywhite.

The album features ex-Sex Pistols Paul Cook (drums) and Steve Jones (guitar) on many of the tracks. PHILIP LYNOTT (bass) plays on PIPELINE , LEAVE ME ALONE , DADDY ROLLIN' STONE , and LONDON BOYS .
