The siege of Fort William Henry (3–9 August 1757, French: Bataille de Fort William Henry) was conducted by a French and Indian force led by Louis-Joseph de Montcalm against the British -held Fort William Henry.

Now in command of Fort William Henry, a post that guarded the southern shore of Lake George and the “Great Carrying Place” portage leading to the Hudson River and the heart of New York, Monro faced a besieging force of some 8,000 French soldiers and Indians.
On August 11, 2007, massive re-enactments in the Village of Lake George commemorated the 250th anniversary of the siege, surrender, and “massacre” at Fort William Henry. The French, however, failed to protect their prisoners.

In the 1990s, forensic anthropologists excavated human remains at Fort William Henry. They found "extensive evidence of this massacre, documenting the fact that atrocities were committed," including beheadings, mutilations ("including genital mutilations"), and disemboweling.
