13. Juni 2011 · St. Marys of the Springs. In 1830 four members of the Dominicans started St. Mary’s Academy, one of the first Catholic schools in Ohio. This Academy offered education to pioneer children of Catholics and non-Catholics. In 1866, a devastating fire consumed the St. Mary’s Academy buildings.
Saint Mary's Academy and College is a religious school of the Society of St. Pius X located in St. Marys, Kansas . The original St. Mary's College. The original college at this location, St. Mary's College, was founded by the Jesuits in 1848 as an Indian mission. [2] .
The College of St. Mary of the Springs was chartered in 1911 as an all-women's school. It became coeducational in 1964 and changed its name to Ohio Dominican College four years later. In 2002, its name changed to Ohio Dominican University.
In 1830, at the request of Bishop Fenwick, O.P. of Cincinnati, five members of the Kentucky Dominicans left for Somerset, Ohio to found St. Mary's Academy, the first Catholic school in Ohio. The four sisters arrived at Somerset on February 5, 1830. This academy offered education to pioneer children of Catholics and non-Catholics.
As early as the nineteenth century, three of the founding congregations had established academies for the education of children and young women: St. Catharine's Academy, Kentucky 1822; St. Mary's Academy, Somerset, Ohio, 1830; St. Agnes Academy, Memphis, Tennessee 1851, (founded by sisters from Kentucky and Ohio); and St. Mary's, New Orleans, 1860.
1924 » The school formally opens as the College of St. Mary of the Springs, a four-year liberal arts institution. 1929 » The College receives certification from the state to offer Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees.
